THE WORK

Guardian Mutant — Error Proof is an individually classified sculptural object by Marcel Katz, preserved within the Maison Marcel archive as a record of process, variation, and material history.

The work originates from the Guardian Mutant edition but exists outside the numbered edition of 11.

During production, the interior engravings along the temple legs were applied upside down. The object is also visibly designated “ERROR.”

Rather than correcting, concealing, or discarding the irregularity, the work was retained in its original state and formally classified as an Error Proof.

The error is not presented as damage. It is the defining provenance of the object.

THE SCULPTURE

Guardian is among the most architectural forms in the MARCEL archive.

Its broad upper structure, pronounced bridge, deeply framed lenses, extended temples, and substantial 48-gram construction give the sculpture an autonomous physical presence.

Within the Mutant variation, translucent acid-green acetate moves through the black structure like an internal current. The color appears restrained from the front, then becomes increasingly visible through the edges, interior construction, and temple legs.

The work changes according to light, position, and viewing angle.

It may be worn, displayed, studied, collected, and preserved. Its relationship to the face is one dimension of the sculpture, not the limit of its identity.

THE ERROR

The interior engravings on the temple legs appear upside down.

These characteristics distinguish the object from the numbered Guardian Mutant edition and establish its classification as an Error Proof.

The inversion documents a specific moment in the making of the work. It remains permanently embedded within the object and cannot be separated from its history.

What would ordinarily have been corrected in conventional production has instead been preserved as evidence of process.

The Error Proof therefore exists as both sculpture and production artifact: an object whose irregularity gives it a singular position within the Guardian Mutant archive.

MATERIAL AND MAKING

Guardian Mutant is constructed from layered Italian acetate, Italian stainless steel hardware, and ZEISS gradient lenses.

The sculpture is handcrafted in Fiorano Modenese, Italy, through specialized processes of cutting, forming, assembly, polishing, lens fitting, engraving, and final adjustment.

Its layered construction reveals contrasting black and translucent green acetate throughout the front, interior edges, and temple legs.

Subtle variations in transparency, coloration, markings, polishing, and material transition are retained as part of the object’s physical identity.

Its upside-down interior engravings and ERROR designation are intentional identifying characteristics of this Error Proof and are fully documented as part of its provenance.

They are not post-production damage, signs of wear, or alterations made after completion.

Once acquired, it will remain documented within the archive under its Error Proof classification.
